Chapter 7

AS THE POLICE CAR PULLED up to the jailhouse, I was suddenly struck by the gravity of the situation. A part of me had hung to the hope that this was all a joke, a prank, a hoax. I thought, surely, the police officers would realize who I am and what a mistake they’d made.

Come on. Seriously? Me? Mrs. Priscilla Prickly, wife to one of the richest men in San Angelo? Me, steal a diamond ring? And when my husband had just offered me the most spectacular ring ever? What use could I possibly have for another lavish ring?

It didn’t make sense. Surely they would see that. They had to see it.

The two police officers got out and Marge came to the back to help me out.

“Do you know who I am?” I said, instantly regretting it as I heard the diva in my words.

“I’m sure you’re a very important woman,” Marge said as she guided me to the door. “You can tell the judge all about it and she’ll decide what to do with you.”

“What are you bringing me?” the clerk behind the desk said.

“Theft.”

“Name?” the clerk said, his eyes on the screen in front of him.

“Priscilla Pinkerton Prickly,” I said.

Numb as the process of booking me went on, I answered the questions asked, and did as I was told as I was photographed and fingerprinted. The surreal nature of the situation weighed down on me as I was led through a thick and heavy door and down a corridor to a cell, that I had to physically shake the sense of doom off my shoulders.

As I shuddered, the guard looked at me. “I can get you an extra blanket if you need it.”

It was good to just hear a few kind and sympathetic words... human.

“That’s okay,” I said, aware that my shuddering had nothing to do with the temperature. “Thanks anyway.”

I suddenly thought of my father and found the strength to be optimistic. After all, he’d been wrongly accused and jailed. Embezzlement, they’d said. And to think that my father-in-law was behind it all.

But that was all water under the bridge now. I’d cleared my father’s name and had dealt firmly and fairly with Preston’s father. It was crazy to think about the messed-up family Preston was from. And yet... when I thought of the man that Preston was, so hard-working, dedicated, and strong. He was a man of his word, a man of passion and a man of eternal devotion.

My heart swelled as I thought of him and I wondered how he would react to my present predicament.

It was my turn to have my name cleared and I was optimistic that he could easily clear it. After all, he was influential around town, wasn’t he?

By the time I entered my small cell, and the door was slammed shut behind me, I nearly had a smile on my lips.

“Fancy seeing you here.”

Recognizing the familiar voice, I looked up. Across the way stood Olivia in her cell, smirking. Her delicate and long tapered fingers had a relaxed hold of the iron bars in front of her.
