“I can’t believe you came here.”

“Why?”

The cosy table in a quiet corner of the Glendoon Inn gave Fletcher and me the privacy we needed to talk, but once again, I found that I had no idea what to say.

“Because… Because you live on the other side of the world.”

“And when a friend’s in trouble, I’m gonna help.”

Friends. Right. He’d said that in his first email from Antarctica. I’d read it a hundred times. A thousand. I’ve never been good with words, but I don’t want to leave the deep freeze in a year and find that all my friends have forgotten me. So here’s a cute picture of a humpback whale.

I’d laughed because the whale was as uncute as an animal could get and also with relief because I’d been so sure that I’d never hear from Fletcher again, not after the way I’d run out on him. Now he’d offered me a lifeline, and I grabbed it with both hands. Well, kind of. What I actually did was text him a picture in return. Finding an actual whale was out of the question, so I’d swallowed the lump in my throat and hurried over to the library to snap a photo of Moby Dick.

Me: Sorry, this is the best I can do.

And then we’d carried on writing to each other, fallen back into the same easy conversation we’d started in Thailand. Fletcher had given me a virtual tour of Antarctica, and I’d followed his lead and learned to love the nature on my doorstep with weekend trips to the park and the beach. Until I met him, I’d always been more of an indoor person, but he’d taught me there was a whole other part of the world just waiting to be explored. Even Glendoon had a macabre beauty, and I’d spotted badgers and barn owls, hedgehogs and hen harriers, pine martens and peregrine falcons, red deer and ravens…

But then I’d ghosted Fletcher. I’d screwed up, I’d shut down, and I’d pushed him away.

Now he was here.

And I was at an absolute loss for words.

“So…” I began, trying desperately to keep my tears in check. “Welcome to Scotland.”

“How’s college going?”

“Uh, okay, I think?” Stay positive, Paige. “I mean, I get tired a lot, but since I have zero social life, I’ve been able to spend plenty of time on my assignments.”

“Know that feeling. The past year, I’ve spent more time with penguins than I have with people.”

Relief trickled through my veins. This…this was more like the old days. Just the two of us talking, no pressure.

“The project’s wrapped up now?”

“Yeah, we obtained some good data, and I have a thousand more pictures to show you. Right before I left, a pod of orcas was playing in front of the research station, so there’s video too.”

“I can’t wait to see that. I managed to film a red squirrel at Glendoon last week, or maybe the week before. It sat on the seat of the old tractor as if it was driving the thing.
