Hope had fallen asleep on the short drive back from Ben’s. After parking in the garage, Connor unsnapped his daughter from her seat and lifted her into his arms. Her thumb went directly back into her mouth as she snuggled her head in his neck. It still amazed Connor how much love he felt for her. As he grabbed the diaper bag and headed into the house, he couldn’t help but wonder how his parents ever survived the loss of their daughter. If anything ever happened to Hope, he would be destroyed. He would never be the same person again.

Thinking back on how his life had been before Caitlyn died, and how it changed after, he had to admit, his parents weren’t the same. Before his sister died, his dad had loved taking trips as a family, buying his kids anything they wanted. He always bought some new car every two years. His mom was all about the community, obsessed with making sure the house was always clean and decorated nicely. All of that had changed. His parents started finding pleasure in being home more, spending time outside with just the four of them. The house hadn’t gotten redecorated again until right before they put it on the market to sell, and as for his dad’s vehicle, he had kept the same one for over ten years. As a matter of fact, they were still driving the last car they bought eight years ago. Material things weren’t important anymore—it became about family and time. That’s what he wanted with Tess and Hope. Just to spend time together, the three of them, and hopefully one day, a couple more kids.

Connor was about to walk up the steps to go lay Hope down in her room when Tess walked around the corner. He held his fingers to his lips to let her know their daughter was sound asleep. Tess mouthed the word “Okay” and tiptoed over to them to softly kiss Hope’s head.

“What about me?” Connor whispered to Tess.

His heart sped up and his blood rushed through his veins as Tess wrapped her hands around his bicep, stood on her toes, and melded their mouths together in a gentle, patient, smoldering kiss that set him on fire. It was almost innocent, yet it still held enough punch to make him harden. No one had ever had this effect on him. Only Tess. That was why he hadn’t been with another woman since he was twenty-two, the first time he’d made love to her.

He couldn’t take his eyes off her. The smile on her upturned face was bright and warm, and reminded him of a perfect sunny day. Returning her smile with one of his own, he leaned toward her and placed a soft kiss to her nose. “I’ll be right back.”

He took his time laying down Hope, then went in search of Tess. He found her in the kitchen slicing up cheese and crackers at the island where two freshly poured glasses of red wine sat.
