They hadn’t talked much on the drive back to Durham. Kathryn concentrated on driving and Den watched the cars passing and the glimpses of scenery.

There was no conversation when they arrived at the flat. Den pushed Kathryn against the wall by the door and deftly removed her glasses before kissing her. The professor didn’t protest as she unzipped her trousers and slipped her hand through. The wetness that met Den’s hand did surprise her.

“It’s a wonder we got here in one piece if this is what you were thinking about,” Den whispered.

Kathryn moaned, “Don’t talk. Just take me to bed.”

If they weren’t upright in a most uncomfortable position, Den would have thought she was dreaming when she heard those words. She didn’t need any further encouragement and the next few hours were spent exploring each other’s bodies. Den’s only coherent thought during that time was that if getting unengaged had this effect on her lover, they would have to do it on a regular basis.

A duet of rumbling stomachs reminded them that they hadn’t had eaten any food since breakfast. Den propped herself up on one elbow and looked into Kathryn’s unfocused blue eyes.

“How about a shower?”

“If you’re suggesting we do it together, we won’t get anything to eat for another hour.”

Den refrained from stating the obvious. “Is there any food in the house?”

“Frozen pizza.”

“That’ll do. You shower first, I’ll put the oven on.” Den kissed her forehead and climbed out of bed. Their clothes were scattered throughout the flat. She followed the trail to find all the items she needed. Tripping over a box on the kitchen floor she let out a yell.

Kathryn came in, wrapped in a towel. “What’s the matter?”

“This.” It looked like a box of sand, half the contents now spread out over the tiles. “What the fuck is it?”

“Oh.”

“Oh, what?”

Kathryn moved closer and looked up, a goofy smile on her face. “How would you feel about adopting a kitten?”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes.” Kathryn told her about finding the small creature crouching by the door in the rain. “I’ve offered to take her if no one makes a claim. Her name’s Misty. I think you’ll like her.”

“If she’s a stray, how do you know she’s called Misty? Or did she tell you that?” Den had spent part of the time on the drive home thinking about Ellie’s supposed conversations with the long dead Cartimandua.

“No. That’s what I named her. She’s mostly grey with a bit of white on her chest and her paws.”

Den smiled at her. “You’ve become all maternal. I think I like it.”

“But, really, are you okay with it? You’re not allergic or anything, are you?”

“No. You do realize this fulfills a typical lesbian stereotype.”

Kathryn just gave her an enigmatic smile and drifted off to the bathroom.

After switching the oven on, Den cleared up the mess on the floor with the brush and pan. She washed her hands before removing the pizza from the freezer and unwrapping it. Pouring two glasses of red wine, she carried them into the living room and sat down.
