It’s possible to cope with the inevitability of one’s death when it remains a shadowy, abstract event in the barely imagined distant future. The usual method is just to ignore it—but when it suddenly looms into immediate proximity one can ignore it no longer; one is forced to accept its terrible reality . . .

Pascal’s reaction to the undeniable fact that in the space of a few hours he was going to be killed in a particularly unpleasant way was one of sheer panic. He couldn’t stop trembling and had suffered several attacks of severe diarrhea during the three hours since being returned to the cell. The bucket—the nearest thing to toilet facilities available—was already half full and smelling very bad.

Not that he noticed. All he could think about was somehow getting away, but the more ideas he came up with the more futile they seemed. The only way out was through the door and it was locked. There was no chance of breaking it down and even less chance of overpowering one of the keepers and grabbing his gun. There was nothing in the cell that he could use as a weapon. He thought of setting fire to the mattress but he had no matches or lighter. And even if by some miracle he did get out he would still have to get past all of Penward’s men and scale an electrified fence.

So he paced impotently up and down the small room, wondering how long he had left and how painful it would be when—He staggered over to the bucket again, this time to throw up in it. He was still retching when he heard someone at the door. Oh no, he thought, it’s time . . . !

The door opened and Pascal almost collapsed with relief. It was Lady Jane. Then he felt ashamed that she should see him this way. He got up, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. “Christ, am I glad to see you,” he told her.

She remained by the door, her expression unreadable as she stared at him. He couldn’t tell if there was accusation or pity in her eyes. Finally she spoke. “Darren said I could see you for a few moments. It amuses him. Us, I mean.”

Pascal noticed a purple bruise on her left cheek. “He hit you?”

“I refused to answer his questions. At first.”

“You weren’t exaggerating when you said he was insane.

He’s bloody crazy! Dropping his marbles all over the floor.”

Pascal gave a strained laugh. “He plans to let his dinosaurs loose across the world. In the Australian outback, Africa, places like that, so they’ll be ready to take over the planet again after the Third World War. Did you know about all this?”

She nodded. “But I couldn’t tell anyone. Darren would have killed me.”

“A lot of people are going to die if he actually does start distributing those monsters around the globe, World War Three or no World War Three.
