Kingdom of Fjaora

Lathyr Strain ducked his head in time to avoid Zela’s dagger. In her search for the cure of the blood-rage, she often needed an outlet for her frustration and Lathyr was happy to provide a distraction. He countered her second attack with a magical shield as he grabbed for one of the swords on the weapons racks.

Zela slid across the sand on her knees and rammed her knee into his stomach, but Lathyr wrapped his hand in her hair and head-butted the fierce fighter. It was unbelievable to think that nearly two years ago, Zela had been a cynical doctor simply walking through life without any real purpose. And here she was, battling beside them in an ancient war between rival were-wolf packs. Her skills grew and her mind sharpened every day.

Lathyr knew she was close to curing the hunger that drove them all to madness; she just needed the right motivation. Zela rolled out from under Lathyr and shoved the heel of her hand into his nose. He retaliated with a brutal swing of his sword that knocked her dagger out of her hand. With a flourish that would make any swashbuckler green with envy, Lathyr pinned Zela to the wall of the training grounds and smirked.

“You cheated,” she huffed.

“On the contrary, I never agreed to fight fairly.”

Zela had become his greatest friend. She understood him in ways his brothers never could and withheld judgment. Lathyr just wished that she would not have such high expectations of him, for he was known for disappointing others. Lathyr was the second eldest of the Sons of Biorn, a cursed bloodline of Viking nobility and warlords tasked with fighting in the name of Odin against Fenrir’s army of dark wolves known as the Bane Bloods.

Eons ago, Odin cursed the lineage of Tyrfing Biorn, Jarl of Fjaora. Until the end of time, his bloodline was to wear the faces of monstrous beasts. Each male was either consumed by the blood-rage of his beast or they died in battle before their thirtieth birthday, but Eir, Goddess of Mercy, bestowed a blessing of profound magical gifts upon the sons of Biorn. The blessing gave them immortality and enough strength to learn how to control their beast while in their human forms.

Lathyr and his brothers did not often change at will, for the blood-rage grew stronger with each transformation. Ever since the Bane Bloods had found a way to push the Silverblood pack to the brink of starvation, more and more of their kind succumbed to the curse and were sent to the Skelmir Forest. If one could conquer the hunger, they were considered extremely fortunate.

Only his half-brother, Garrus Rex, had ever held the hunger at bay in all the years of the Silverblood existence. Most sample the flesh of humans and are driven mad with the curse. Dom Zul often overhunted the hunting grounds and forced them to search far and wide for fresh food.

It was Dom Zul’s way of slowly dwindling the numbers of the Fjaora’s army.
