Chapter 8 Moya

“This basement leads to an underground labyrinth of tunnels,” I explained as I unlocked the entrance. “It’s not been used in a long time, so I don’t think we’ll run into anyone.”

I was trying to ignore the blatant lust in his eyes and the promise of pleasure he didn’t try to hide. This vampire was checking me out and loving every minute of it. That silvery gaze was mesmerizing, and my will weakened under the onslaught.

For a few seconds, I was tempted to kiss him but then I remembered he would be hurt in the process. When we watched the sunrise, he was in physical pain from the sun’s rays and when I touched his hand, I could sense his discomfort even when he didn’t complain. Tonight, he wore leather gloves but skin to skin contact was never going to work between us no matter how much we desired one another.

Yeah, I wanted him too. Sort of pointless to keep denying it. Our attraction and chemistry were nearly combustive. If that wasn’t so tragically true, I might have laughed.

My warmth and light would always harm a Vorigan vampire. It was the entire point of my creation and those of my ancestors. The alteration took place as the threat to humans increased and our DNA modified to find balance in nature, no matter how twisted.

We could never be what either of us wanted and the knowledge that I’d have to insist we stopped seeing one another hurt my heart. A brief flicker of concern hovered over his handsome features and I knew he partially sensed what I was thinking. There was a reason why Chosen and vampires didn’t mingle. Friendships were impossible. Relationships forbidden. Intimacy a death sentence.

A soft sigh left my lips. “You know we can’t do this, right?” Might as well address the invisible elephant in the room now instead of later.

He closed the distance between us, lifting a hand to cup my cheek. The leather was cool and soft against my skin. “I know.” He swallowed hard. “Doesn’t change my feelings.”

“Or mine,” I admitted.

“Tell me something.” The pleading in his voice was slightly masked by the longing he couldn’t hide. “If you were free, and I wasn’t a monster, could we find a way to make this work?”

Silly words. They would never matter but I wished that they could.

“Yes, Caleb. I would stay by your side as long as you wanted me.”

“I’d want you forever,” he whispered. His lips dropped to within an inch of mine. “I know it might seem strange, but I’d like to kiss you once before we walk our separate ways.”

“You’re still coming with me now, right?”

He nodded. “Yes, but I want the memory of our kiss to stay with me all night until the sunrise.”

For a vicious bloodthirsty vampire, he sure was romantic.

“Why not wait for later?”

“Because the future is unpredictable, my precious, but this moment right now, it’s a certainty.”

I would have assumed Carnage would crash his lips down on mine, taking my mouth savagely as the look in his eyes betrayed but he didn’t.
