THE RAID

At Camp Catlin, Co A and B had supper, packed their equipment and weapons, and were issued D-rations and new field dressings. They placed their black-dyed uniforms, sneakers, helmets, web gear, and toilet kits into gunnysacks and loaded onto trucks after midnight on August 8. The Raiders were quietly trucked to the submarine base adjacent to the Pacific Fleet HQ on the east side of Pearl Harbor, arriving at 0200. They boarded the submarines, their names were checked off, and they lowered their gunnysacks into hatches. Crewmen guided them to their bunks. Most realized that this was the real thing, but some suspected it was just another exercise.

The Argonaut’s commander was certain that even with his skeleton crew, the 134 Raiders aboard made this the record number of persons aboard a submarine conducting an offensive mission. All the spare torpedoes were removed from the submarines, leaving only the four in their bow tubes plus the two in Nautilus’ stern tubes. This provided extra space for passengers, and jury-rigged bunks were fitted in torpedo-rack spaces.
