Chapter 5

Over the past week, Lorne and her team had worked hard trying to obtain information for their investigation. Lorne had rung the care agency herself, and the woman who had called at Harold’s home that day swore blind that she’d left the old man fit and well, sitting in his chair. Lorne had asked around—she had people whom she trusted in social services—and no one had said anything untoward about the agency which had been up and running for the past two years. Therefore, they had drawn a blank. Sharon Jobson, the carer, was in the clear, leaving them scratching their heads about where to go next. No witnesses, no likely CCTV footage on hand to help out. Pete entered the office with a welcome cup of coffee and sat in the chair opposite her.

“You look down, what’s up?”

“I’m tired of going round and round in circles on this one. Nothing has surfaced that we can latch on to, Pete. Aren’t you frustrated?”

He shrugged. “No more than usual. What else can we do, except…?”

She tilted her head. “Except what?”

“I’m not sure I should say. You know how I feel about the witch.”

Lorne smiled. “Carol, that’s who you’re referring to, isn’t it?”

“Yep. I need to wash my mouth out for even suggesting it, right?”

“No, not at all. It might be worth a shot. Let’s face it, we’ve got nothing else to go on. I’ll give her a ring in a mo.”

Just then the phone on her desk rang. “Lorne Simpkins. How can I help?”

“Sorry to disturb you, ma’am. Looks like we’ve got another murder similar to the one you’re already investigating. Thought I’d let you know ASAP.”

“Damn. Where, Bert?”

“Not far from the other estate.”

“Okay, Pete and I will be down in a sec. I’ll grab the details on our way out.” She ended the call, blew on her coffee to cool it down and sipped at it.

“Another murder, I take it?” Pete asked.

“Yep, are you ready to rock and roll?”

“Always ready. Used to getting my coffee break interrupted.”

Lorne tutted. “Get yourself a nine-to-five job, you whinging git.”

“Bloody charming, that is. I would, but your arrest rates would probably plummet.”

She pushed herself away from her desk and tipped her head back to laugh. “In your dreams, buster.”

“Whatever. I’ll grab my jacket and have a quick wee, if it’s all the same to you.” Her disgruntled partner left the office.

Shaking her head, she blew on her coffee again, hoping to take a few more sips before they departed. In the end she managed to down half her cup in the time it took Pete to reappear at the door to the incident room. “Are you ready?”

“Yep, what’s keeping you?” He grinned.

“Heads-up, guys, we’ve got another murder on our patch. We’ll have more info when we get over there. Keep trawling through the information we currently have. Hopefully we’ll find something to link the crimes soon.”

“Ha, a tad presumptuous of you. You’re assuming the crimes are linked. We don’t know that yet.”

“Thanks for pointing that out, partner.
