A for sale sign still hangs on the hotel at Deep Bay. Lester was quoted in 1988 as saying he had an offer of $85 million but would not consider anything under $100 million for what he called "one of the finest structures in the whole eastern Caribbean." By late 1992 the hotel continued to be an enormous financial drain on the government. Part of the drain, albeit a
very small part, came from Ivor Bird, the younger brother of Vere junior and Lester and the man who runs the family-owned radio station. He is a regular patron in the hotel restaurant and bar, where he always signs a tab. When, eventually, hotel management asked him to pay and he refused, Makeda Mikael, Lester's top aide, told him to pay up or be barred from the premises. Ivor went to the prime minister and complained that Mikael had insulted a Bird. The prime minister told Lester to restrain Mikael. Ivor's hotel bills were ignored.
To celebrate New Year's Eve in 1990, Prime Minister Bird decided he would have dinner at the Ramada Renaissance. The public works department hastily resurfaced the two-and-a-half-mile road and repainted the white stripe down the middle; and the prime minister enjoyed a smooth and pleasant ride to the hotel, where by all reports, he and Cutie had a pleasant dinner and a happy new year.
But today the road that Lester built is filled with enormous potholes. The edges are falling away in great scalloped pieces. If a driver's attention wanders from the view of the harbor as he drives from Deep Bay toward St. John's, he might look off to the right, toward the backside of Grays Farm, where open drains and sewers excrete long languid fingers of glistening fluids that ooze across an open landfill and collect into a wide pool.
