ABUSE IS A POISON

Abuse is an act of hostility. The abuser may try to make the abuse look like an act of love—“I only did it to keep you from getting too wild” or “What’s wrong with a mother being close to her son?”—but those lies and blame and rationalizations and bribes are poisonous. And if you keep swallowing the lies and letting the abuser off the hook, you will poison your child, and you will start to die inside. This kind of poison kills many parts of ourselves—our souls, our health, our identities—and leaves us too weak to take control of our own lives.

You must not say: “A little abuse was okay” or “A little abuse didn’t hurt me” or “They did their best, so it’s okay” or “I brought it on myself.”

Do not swallow the poison. Do not let your child swallow a single drop. You can protect your child now. You must.
