Chapter 10
Making Your Choice
IN THIS CHAPTER
Using Google to learn about your prospective career
Mastering the art of informational interviewing
Taking an appropriate shortcut
Tailoring your career to your needs
Avoiding indecision
Imagine that you’ve been dropped from a helicopter onto a frigid mountaintop. You have to hike down to the happy village — a career. You see a number of possible paths, but because of the fog, you can see only a few yards ahead. If you just stand there, unwilling to pick a path to try, you’ll die. The answer, of course, is to start down the path that you sense is best. You could end up at the happy village, find a side path to an even happier village, or, in the worst case, return to the top to try another path.
It’s like that with the careers you’re considering: If you wait until a career feels perfect upfront, you’ll probably freeze. It’s better to simply start down a path. If it’s feeling good, stroll on toward the happy village, perhaps finding along the way a path to an even happier option. If your path of first choice ends up feeling bad, you can always try another.
Here’s a bit of reassurance: Your career path needn’t feel perfect — just promising. Most people who are pleased with their careers weren’t sure that they would be, until after they had gone down the path: Become good at your work, and then tailor and accessorize the career to fit your needs.
So there’s no need to wait to start down a path. Just follow these general steps:
Check out one or more careers using this chapter’s suggestions. Pick the one that feels best.
Do a thorough job search and vet employers carefully so that you’ve maximized the chance that your first job will be well-suited to you.
Tailor and accessorize your job to fit. Or try self-employment, where custom-tailoring is easier.
