Entry Level
Since you have the fewest years out of college, stay close to fellow alumni. Though the people you know best are generally your same age and level, everyone is building a network of increasingly senior and influential people you can all share. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the alumni who are more senior; they may be looking to hire and mentor more junior fellow classmates.
Mid-Level
To fortify your list of external contacts, start attending conferences and association meetings. Stick with the ones that are relevant to your job so you can get the company to pick up the tab, but consider footing the bill for those that expose you to the biggest names in your field. Have your elevator pitch honed and ready, your business cards in hand, and go forth and conquer!
Executive Level
Knowing a lot of people isn’t the same as having a robust network. Stay active in civic and cultural organizations and professional associations so people can see you in action. This way people are actually recommending you for having done good work, not just referring you as a name on a list of acquaintances.
Encore Level
Even if you are approaching retirement or downshifting to a lower profile, stay in touch with people across generations to stay current on all aspects of business and culture. This ensures that you will continue to be valued as a great businessperson, board director, grandparent, and person in general.
Detour Route
If you have hopscotched across industries and functions or have fallen out of touch with people, don’t be afraid to reconnect. People are generally kind and want to help, even if they are not directly related to what you might want to do. It is critically important that you to approach everyone in your network with clear and consistent objectives.
