Courting the red trumpet flowers

hummingbirds in spring

in autumn bees and wasps

At last a ripe tomato

an earwig walking out of

the first love bite

CRICKETSONG

A bell from the earth.

In summertime.

At dusk.

July.

An intimation,

or a warning,

only joyous,

not for this –

this moment,

but the next.

A proclamation –

of contingency –

to mark

not what is

certain, and yet

still to come,

but what might

yet be

brought forth

into being –

chanted by rote,

and in the dark,

the darker the louder,

almost in unison.

A bell

from the earth –

the ripple,

too,

of temporary quiet

radiated by

each footstep.

Overhead,

light cloud.

Few stars.

The first hard freeze

of August,

or October,

that will come

to silence them.
