Engineer Spotlight:
Sir George Cayley
Youâve probably heard of Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Ohio brothers famous for inventing the worldâs first successful powered airplane, which they flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. But a hundred years before that, a British engineer named Sir George Cayley (1773â1857) figured out the science that made the Wright brothersâ achievements possible.
Back in 1799, Cayley correctly suggested what an airplane would need â a wing with an airfoil, some kind of light engine (which did not exist at the time), and some kind of steering system. He identified the forces that affect planes: weight, lift, drag, and thrust. He even built the first flying model gliders and in 1853 engineered a glider that carried a person â the first such flight of its kind.
Many consider Cayley one of the most important engineers in aviation history. And if that wasnât enough, he also invented the tension spoke wheel (which became the bicycle wheel), a self-righting lifeboat, seat belts, signals for railway crossings, and much more!
