Corby and I rushed from the greenhouse to the front of the courtyard, the screams growing louder as we went. It sounded like a woman, tearfully pleading for something, but I couldn’t make out the words. Thank goodness Corby had been with me. The domovoi could have used his magic for teleportation, but instead, he’d opted to run, showing me the quickest way to get from one end of the grounds to the other. I was amazed at how sprightly the little creature was, particularly with his oversized, furry feet and tail. By the time we reached the courtyard, I was nearly breathless from staying hot on his heels.

However, much to my shock, the courtyard was nearly empty, devoid of even the soldiers who constantly seemed to mill around the area. The screams had suddenly quieted, but the fact brought me no comfort. Instead, the silence seemed even more ominous. I craned my neck around, eventually looking down the sloping road toward the Reach’s front gate, where a mob had gathered.

“There!” I shouted to Corby, louder than I intended, then took off running once more.

After a few yards, I realized the domovoi wasn’t behind me, and I turned to see him standing sadly within the confines of the courtyard.

“Corby?!” I exclaimed, half-turning over my shoulder as I slowed my pace.

“I can’t, milady,” he called back sadly. “I cannot leave the castle grounds.”

Swearing under my breath, I picked up my pace once more. I made a mental note to discuss Corby’s confinement with him at a later time. It wasn’t enough that they kept magical creatures locked up like a damned petting zoo, but did they have to treat every being on the grounds with such indignity? Besides the bloody rapacious soldiers, it didn’t seem like any living creature wanted to spend their lives in the Reach. Hell, the kings themselves looked less than thrilled with their surroundings.

But these were musings for another time. For now, I needed to focus on the sudden mob and its purpose.

As I neared, the unmistakable figures of Liam, Kyrian, and Victor appeared near the gate, blocked from the crowd by a contingent of Kyrian’s soldiers. Though I’d initially pegged them for a mob, from what I saw now, the word mob implied too much anger. These people looked defeated and terrified, and as I followed their wide, sorrowful eyes, I saw a noose draped over the thick, knobby branch of one of the tall, sturdy ash trees that flanked the gates. A horse and cart had been pulled just underneath the tree, and perched on the edge of that was a girl of no more than twenty. Her face was slick with snot and tears, and her hands were bound before her. She looked grubby and unkempt, unmistakably a peasant. I knew in my gut that it was her pleading screams I had heard. It was clear what was about to happen.

Though the domovoi couldn’t leave, I spotted Clara a few feet away from the kings, standing with a pewter tray bearing two wine glasses.
