Chapter Eleven

Trent A new morning, the start of a fresh new week in the lush Adirondacks, summer's languid pace quickening to the point where the crisp fall season felt just around the corner. For Trent, it seemed he'd just closed his eyes only moments ago, finally, sleep a taunting, distant friend last night, and now the bustling sounds of activity of the dawn awoke him. It was his fault for spending the entire night in the hospital, but with J.D.'s condition still uncertain, he wasn't going anywhere. His friend, Lisa, one of the night duty nurses and the girl who had dumped him after the prom back in high school, found him a spare room just down the hall from J.D.

"You'll rest plenty here," she said. Strange situation for sure, he thought, your one-time girlfriend taking care of you while your only concern was the health of your current...well, let's just call him a boyfriend for lack of another word. Life sure had changed here on Rodgers Mountain, Trent a modern-day John Boy, J.D. the handsome stranger passing through town, but this wasn't television and their story could hardly be wrapped up after sixty minutes of melodrama, no peaceful lights out at the end of the episode. Nope, just the loud clatter of breakfast trays on noisy metal carts, all serving as a rude awakening for Trent.

He got up from the bed, made his way to the bathroom, where after relieving himself, he faced himself in the mirror. Looking at himself hadn't been a favorite activity of late, he hadn't been able to face the guilty-laden image that always gazed back, one of remorse, a man shamed by his lack of courage. He splashed cold water on his face in an effort to wipe the sleep from his eyes, and then made his way out into the busy corridor. Checking in at the nurses station, he was told Lisa had gone home last night, but they knew the situation, if he wanted, go on in and visit his friend.

"He's awake, and he's already eaten," the duty nurse said. "Quite an appetite."

"Yes," Trent said, "I'm familiar with it."

It had been their mutual and sexually voracious appetites that had put J.D. here, and for a moment Trent fondly remembered the crazy ladder intercourse they had attempted yesterday, how wonderful J.D. had felt inside him, behind him, thrusting...and then he'd crashed to the floor. Trent pushed through into Room 313 and there was J.D., sitting up in bed looking none the worse for wear. He wore a flimsy hospital gown, the crown of his chest hair visible above the loose collar.

"Well, good morning," Trent said.

"Hey, hi, you're here early."

"I never left."

"My hero," J.D. said.

Trent's expression soured. "Don't ever call me that."

J.D. let the issue drop, for which Trent, overly sensitive, appreciated. He knew he should apologize for barking at him, but instead he came to the side of the bed, bent down and kissed J.D. on the lips.

"How are you feeling?"

"Better, a good night's sleep, some medication, it's a wonder what these places can do.
