Chapter Fourteen

GRANNY STOOD IN FRONT of Fred and frowned. "But I tell you, she didn't do it!"

Stan came sauntering out of the lockup. "That seems like something someone trying to provide a criminal an alibi would say."

Granny threw up her hands. "Yes! That's what I'm trying do. Provide an alibi! She was with me."

We had gone over to the local police station. It was a nondescript square building that aspired to be brutalist in style. However, it was a low rent failure. The most interesting architectural detail was it had a glass door. The inside was a study in beige with drab walls, ancient office furniture, and the kind of linoleum found in old school bathrooms. They say that there are paint colors that can drive a person over the edge. I felt like they should have included this building in that study. I had a theory it was why Stan and Fred's false arrest record was so high. They were bored out of their skulls.

However, that still didn't change the fact they had Felicia locked up.

"You had eyes on her the whole time?" Stan challenged.

"I left her on her own to do her work for a couple hours while I did some work upstairs but—"

"Ah HA!" shouted Stan, pointing his fat finger at her. "So she could have snuck out while you weren't looking!"

"Except when I came back down, she had obviously been working."

"Obviously? Or was it a ploy?"

But that's when Madison came stalking into the precinct station and judging from the sway of her ponytail, she was raging. "What in tarnation do you think you're doing? Did I hear that you had my sister in lockup?!"

"Now... now..." Stan tried to soothe. "We don't like doing this, but she was driving a car that reportedly tried to run someone off the road."

"Well, obviously she didn't do it."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because I'm telling you, she didn't do it! There's no motive! She just got here and has spent her whole time looking through boxes of old junk."

"Hey!" Granny exclaimed.

Madison was on a tear. She slapped a check down on the desk. "Here is bail. Fill out whatever number you need. Now let her out this minute."

Stan gulped, completely terrified of her and not sure what the right thing to do in this situation was.

Fred pushed forward, flustered. "Um... she's on a 72-hour hold. She needs a lawyer. Judge hasn't set bail. He's out golfing. And we're closed for the day."

She waved her hand around. "Excuse me? You're standing right here. We're all standing right here. You're open. Let my sister go!"

Stan looked at Fred uncomfortably, but was prepared to follow his lead. "Nope. We can't process this until we figure out what we're... um... until the morning. We're closed. So, we'll bid you a fond good afternoon and see you in the morning."

And then they ushered us all out.

Madison gave a frustrated scream and stomped her designer-clad foot on the ground. She turned to me. "You better tell that boyfriend of yours to get these yahoos in line.
