Chapter 22

Ryker

I was feeling much better about things. I hoped she was as well. It felt like it. The tension seemed to be subsiding and I was hoping to have a nice trip away with her. We’d be busy, but we would be busy together.

“You are my favorite person in the whole world,” I told Alysha.

She laughed. “Today, I am.”

“Seriously, thank you for doing this for me.”

“I’m doing it for her. I don’t like her thinking she doesn’t belong. We all like her and we all want her to be comfortable.”

I pushed a box of copy paper out of the way and looked around the storage room. There was a small window in the space that had been covered forever ago. I had torn down the cardboard to let some natural light in.

“It’s going to work,” I said with a nod. “It’s small but it’s better than that park bench.”

“She’s going to love it. I will have it all done and ready for her on Monday when you guys get back.”

“Remember, don’t hold back on the expense. I called that painter. He should be here tomorrow morning.”

She nodded. “I get it. I’ve already ordered office furniture. I’m coming in on Saturday to get it all done. That will be enough time for the paint to dry.”

I hugged Alysha. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“Hey, it was your idea. I just get to play decorator. I hope it’s what she likes.”

“I’m sure she will be happy with anything at this point,” I said. “Am I a total asshole for not getting her an office sooner? You have an office. My last assistants never needed one.”

“Because your last assistants never really did the kind of work she does. Rachel is bored. With Trinity taking over a lot of your side of the business, she doesn’t have to do anything but answer the phone.”

I laughed. “Isn’t that a good thing?”

“It’s a great thing. Don’t screw this one up.”

“I know. I’ve been warned. I’m going to get out of here. I have to pack and make sure the housekeeper knows I’m leaving town. I’ll see you Monday.”

“Have fun and try to enjoy the game.”

“I will,” I said and walked out of the office.

It was Wednesday night. This morning, I walked by that storage room and got the idea to clean it out and make it her office. Alysha was on board with the idea and was going to have it all done for Trinity. Monday morning it would be her surprise.

This was my first step into getting into her good graces. I wanted her to see I could be thoughtful and caring. I wasn’t just the guy she worked for and occasionally had sex with.

I thought I was giving up on the idea of her and me ever being a thing. I spent a lot of time thinking about it and getting right with myself. I weighed all the advice from my mother and brother and decided to bite the bullet. I was going to give this thing a go.
