Chapter 35: Contact Front

The horizon was a wash of golden light as the sun dipped toward the marshes. From the rooftop of the makeshift command center, I could see the entire stretch of Beaufort’s newly erected defenses. The town was becoming a fortress, but we all knew that no wall would stand forever. Not against what was coming.

It started with a call from the aerial recon team, the ones flying regular sweeps along the coastline and surrounding towns. Our resources were spread thin, but we’d made it a priority to keep eyes in the sky. And now, as we gathered in the command center, the reports had come in—something big was heading our way.

“They’re coming from the north,” Baker said, his voice tight as he pointed to a map spread out on the table. “Approximately one thousand of them. Maybe more.”

One thousand. My heart sank. This wasn’t just a random group of shamblers we could pick off. It was a horde—an unstoppable, rotting mass that would overwhelm everything in its path.

“How much time?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.

“They’ll reach us by tomorrow afternoon,” the recon Marine replied, sweat visible on his brow. “Maybe sooner if they don’t get slowed down.”

I stared at the map. The zombies were about ten miles out, moving along the same road we had used for search-and-rescue just days before. There was no real cover along the way, nothing to funnel them into. They’d come at us like a flood, smashing against the walls of Beaufort like a tidal wave of death.

Baker’s voice cut through my thoughts. “Alright, we don’t have time to sit on our hands. Here’s the plan.”

He motioned for everyone to gather around. I leaned in with the rest of the team—Marines, engineers, and a few of the civilian leaders who had stepped up to help organize the survivors.

“The walls are holding, but we can’t let them get that close,” Baker said, tracing his finger along the road leading into Beaufort. “We’ll intercept them five miles out, right here.” He tapped a spot on the map where the road cut through a patch of open farmland. “We set up barricades, force them into a bottleneck. Air support will soften them up with strafing runs, but it’s on us to finish the job. We’ll dig in here and hit them hard with everything we’ve got.”

There were murmurs around the table, some confident, others uncertain. A thousand was more than any of us had faced at once, and we all knew what happened when a horde hit critical mass. Once the infected smelled human flesh, it didn’t matter how much firepower you had—the sheer numbers could overwhelm you.

I took a deep breath. “What about fallback positions? If we get overrun, we need a second line.”

Baker nodded. “Agreed. We’ll set up secondary defenses two miles out from the walls. If they break through the first barricade, we retreat there. But the goal is to stop them before they reach that point.”

I nodded, glancing at the map again.
