Even strong brick buildings, such as some schools and churches, were no match for the raging storm. After less than a minute, itâs all over. A strange quiet falls on the room. You sit up. Then you stand. Thereâs almost nothing left of the church.
There are boards and trash everywhere. Piles of bricks and splintered wood are strewn about the floor and the nearby grounds. You see the pastor help an elderly woman to her feet. A few other people are helping an injured man.
Spread out in front of you are the ruins of your small town, Biehle. It doesnât even look familiar. Trees youâve climbed on are now uprooted or split in two. The small swing that hung from a post behind the church is missing.
You have a headache, but otherwise you feel fine. You seem to be one of the lucky ones.
âFire!â someone yells. âSomethingâs burning!â
You run and climb over one of the churchâs crumbled walls. Youâre careful not to hurt yourself. Plenty of broken glass is scattered everywhere.
You run through the churchyard to the nearest road. Where there used to be a row of houses, none remain. A small plume of smoke is rising from the wreckage at the end of the block.
âFire!â a woman shouts again. You recognize her. Itâs Mrs. Jeffries. Sheâs standing outside her house, calling for help. In her arms is her two-year-old daughter. But Mrs. Jeffries has twins. You donât see her son anywhere.
âHelp!â Mrs. Jeffries yells. âPlease, help!â
You look at her, and then glance down the street. At the far end of town, you see another trail of smoke. Could it be coming from your own house? Is your mom there? You wonder if sheâs okay. Maybe she needs help, too.
