Jesus- “Our God”
In answer Thomas said to him: “My Lord and my God!” – John 20:28 NWT
Thomas one of the 12 disciples demanded evidence! Jesus was dead; he had seen it with his own eyes, the Messiah who was supposed to deliver Israel crucified and no more… Or so he thought. What Thomas was looking for was evidence, he wanted to believe that his Messiah was truly who He claimed to be. He said “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails and stick my finger into the print of the nails and stick my hand into his side, I will certainly not believe”. (John 20:25 NWT) The Scriptures record the astonishing confession of faith when Thomas is confronted with the Risen Lord of Glory; he answers Jesus and calls Him “My Lord and my God! ” (John 20:28) Was Thomas confused or possibly over-zealous in his proclamation? Certainly if Jesus knew that Thomas was in error he would have certainly corrected him as the Apostle John was corrected when he fell down to worship one of the Angels in Revelation 19:10. How does Jesus react to Thomas calling Him Lord and God? “Jesus said to him: “Because you have seen me have you believed? Happy are those who do not see and yet believe.”- John 20:29
Blessed! Jesus affirms his statement and does not rebuke him. He blesses those who believe in Him, in his resurrection and in his Lordship and deity. To Thomas there was no mistake, he knew who Christ was.
Jesus Christ is repeatedly called God throughout the entire Bible, even in the New World Translation. When witnessing to a Jehovah’s Witness concerning the deity of Christ the magnitude of John 20:28 cannot be overstated. This verse reveals that one of the earliest confessions of faith in Jesus and his resurrection was also a confession of his deity. I came to a point in my time when my conscience would continually confront me on this verse, and a question kept reciting in my mind and heart; “Is Jesus my Lord?” Of course he is- I would say. “But is he your God?” This is a perfect question to ask the JW, if Jesus is the Lord and God of Thomas, then he is the Lord and God of you and of all Christians.
The deity of Christ is so unmistakable that it is woven into the very fabric of the story of God’s redemption. In the Hebrew Scripture there is an anticipation for the coming Messiah and Isaiah 9:6, 7 prophesies this concerning Jesus:
“For there has been a child born to us , there has been a son given to us ; and the princely rule will come to be upon his shoulder. And his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father , Prince of Peace. To the abundance of the princely rule and to peace there will be no end , upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom in order
