CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âI tell you wot, cock,â said Mr. Lugg, looking at an enormous gold hunter which had been entirely ruined, from his point of view, by an engraved tribute in the back which rendered it of little interest to pawnbrokers. âI tell you wot.
Sheâs not coming.â
Mr. Campion turned away from his sitting-room window and wandered across the carpet, his lean dinner-jacketed shoulders hunched.
âA nasty little girl,â he observed. âTake the crème-de-menthe away. Drink it if you like.â
âAnd smell like a packet oâ hiccorf suckers. I know.â Lugg waddled to the coffee table and restored the offending bottle to the cocktail cabinet. âYou treat me as a sort of joke, donât you?â he remarked, his great white face complacent. âIâm a regular clown. I make you laugh. I say funny things, donât I?â
His employer regarded him dispassionately. In his velvet house coat, his chins carelessly ranged over a strangling collar and his little black eyes hopeful, he was not by any means an uncomic figure.
âWell, go on, say it. Iâm a laugh, ainât I?â
âNot to everyone.â
âWot?â He seemed hurt and also incredulous.
âNot to everyone. A lot of my friends think youâre overrated.â
âOverrated?â The black eyes wavered for a moment before a faint smile spread over the great face. âReelly?â he said at last, adding tolerantly, âIt takes all sorts to make a world, donât it? Itâs a funny thing, I often give meself a laugh. I think weâd better give âer up, donât you? Itâs no use me sitting around dressed like a parcel if companyâs not expected. Thatâs makinâ trouble.
Mr. Tuke advises me to wear lower collars. One inch above the shirtband, in âis opinion, is quite sufficient if a gentleman âas an âeavy neck. What would you say?â
âWhatâs the time?â
âClose on arf-past. Sheâs not cominâ. Sheâs led you up the gardin. Thatâs a woman all over. I donât know what you want to bother with them for. Two blokes
âave died and are tucked up tidy, and what if there is a lot of talk about your sis and a sleepinâ tonic? Thatâs nothinâ. Leave it alone. Fergit it. Be a gent and look it in the face and donât see it.â
âA sleeping tonic?â Mr. Campionâs pale eyes were cold behind his spectacles and Mr. Lugg perceived the pitfall too late.
âA naspirin, then,â he said defiantly. âFergit it. Donât roll in the mud. Donât bathe yerself in it.â
âWhen did you hear this?â
âOh, ages ago. Months, it was. Last week perâaps.â Mr. Lugg was throwing the subject about until he lost it. âI changed the conversation, if you want to know, same as any gent would âoo âadnât fergot âisself.â
âWhere was this? At your beastly pub?â
âI may âave âeard a careless word at the club. I really fergit.â Mr. Luggâs eyes were veiled and his dignity was tremendous.
âThe club!â said Mr. Campion with a force and bitterness which were unusual in him. âAll the blasted clubs. Oh, my God, what a mess! Thereâs the bell at last.
Let her in, thereâs a good chap.
