Q: Could you elaborate a little bit about distractions "punching holes in your meditation"? You hear a sound and that takes your mind away from the object. If a thought comes up, that too takes your mind away from the object. Are you saying that we should end a session any time our mind conceptualizes more than three thoughts?
A: That statement about losing it three times really refers to the case when you have quite good stability, when you really are an experienced meditator. In that case, if a loud sound or anything else of the kind comes a third time, stop your session.
