CHAPTER NINETEEN

‘I don’t think anyone is coming, Patsy,’ said Dixie-Lee, still perched on the top bunk and holding the broken mug handle.

‘That’s what they want us to think, and then they’ll storm the room when the fucking chances are I’m on the khazi and you’re sound asleep.’

Dixie-Lee looked at Patsy and shuddered. She really didn’t want to picture her on the toilet. Still, if she wasn’t getting out of prison anytime soon, it would be a possibility. The thought made her stomach churn over. It was true. There really wasn’t much left that prison could take from a person because it sure as hell was taking every ounce of her dignity.

Patsy started moaning and groaning while pacing the small room.

‘Patsy, what’s up?’

‘Nuffin, kiddo.’

‘No, really, why are you pacing?’ She could see that Patsy was slightly bent over. ‘You need the loo, don’t you?’

Patsy’s face looked like a beetroot. ‘I do. I’ve always had stomach issues, and I can’t ask you to go outside in case they come for you, and I’m on the poxy throne. Agghhh!’ she groaned, once more, as she clutched her middle.

Dixie-Lee jumped down from the top bunk. ‘Look, don’t worry about me. I’ll wait outside, and if they turn up, I’ll come back in.’

‘No, don’t! I promised your muvver I would be her eyes and ears here. The last thing I want is for something to happen to you.’

‘Patsy, nothing will happen. I can easily shoot back inside. I’m hardly going to wander around, am I?’

‘Okay, but don’t go anywhere else. If they come, get back inside. I’ll sling my own shit at them, if I have to.’

That thought had Dixie-Lee almost gagging. But with her mind on her enemies, she slipped outside the room to give Patsy some privacy. However, she had hardly closed the door when she was stunned to find three women leaning against the wall. They had managed to sneak up to her cell without making a sound, and there they were, like a pride of lions, lying in wait and hoping for the monkey to drop out of the tree.

It was Dulcie who moved first. Swiftly, cupping her hand around Dixie-Lee’s mouth, she lifted her off the floor and away from the wall to prevent her from kicking and screaming.

But Dixie-Lee wasn’t going to go quietly. She kicked back at Dulcie’s crotch as hard as she could.

However, one of the other women, a tall skinny blonde, was on the ball. She instantly grabbed Dixie-Lee’s ankles, stopping her from lashing out and causing further injury.

Strangely, Dixie-Lee was more angry than scared right now, so she bucked, buckled, and wiggled like Houdini escaping a straitjacket. But the more she thrashed around, the tighter Dulcie held her grip, until she was finally carried into a cell further along the wing and thrown onto the floor.

Dixie-Lee was out of breath, but all that hurt was her knee, where she had landed heavily. So, in the blink of an eye, she jumped to her feet to assess her surroundings.
