Chapter 20 – The Blue Yeti

The Cheeserie’s factory was in a large section of the city adjacent to the merchant district. This area was where the city’s merchants stored all their goods before they were shipped out or held those that had arrived from other baronies but had not yet moved into the storefronts. It was also the location of all the city’s artisans. Woodworkers, masons, armourers, enchanters, and the like, could all be found here. Kit had never ventured into this section of the city, and she had been amazed by the amount of culture to be found here.

The streets themselves were wide and extremely well maintained. There were no booths or vendors there, but she could see dozens of master-artisans working in the open air outside their buildings. They passed by a sculptor who was fashioning the likeness of Father Hoarfrost out of a yellow-white stone of some kind.

“Peace unto you,” Kit offered as she admired the man’s artisanship. “Is your creation to be donated to the Temple as an offering to our god, Titan?”

He didn’t even bother to look up from his work. “Not bloody likely. If the Old Goat wants me to create a likeness of himself to adorn the Temple, well then he’ll bloody well pay me like everyone else does.” His voice was becoming more and more agitated as he spoke. “Just because something is for the Temple, they expect it to be an offering of some sort. I have bills, you know, children to feed, a house to maintain.” Finally, he slammed down his hammer and chisel and glowered up at Kit. His angry gaze weakened when it fell upon the holy symbol of Titan engraved on her training leathers. “Forgive me, little sister. I meant ...” quickly he jumped to his feet, realizing it was impolite to speak to a member of the Temple while seated. “I meant no disrespect.”

Seeing the look of dismay on his face, Kit chose to not make him feel any worse than he already did. “Peace unto you,” she repeated. “The fault is my own. I made a poor assumption, and for that I must be the one who apologises to you.”

The tension drained from the sculptor’s face.

Kit continued to examine the art. “If this is not meant as an offering, why are you creating such a beautiful likeness of the High Priest?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “I was offered twice my normal fee if I could create this statue before the annual celebration at the Temple. If someone’s willing to pay, I’ll carve just about anything.”

“Celebration?” Kit asked. Then it dawned on her. “Do you mean the Feast of Titan’s Bounty celebrations?”

“The one and only,” he replied. “To be honest, getting paid extra is a nice bonus, but it will do me well to have my work on display during the Feast. Father Hoarfrost invites many of the city’s wealthiest to attend, and hopefully donate to the Temple. When they see my work, I’ll likely get more business coming my way.
