Chapter 14

Henny went looking for Lukas at school first thing the next morning. He was standing with the twins, leaning against the school building as they usually did in the morning. She could tell by the looks on their faces that they, too, had heard the news of the government overthrow. Here and there around the schoolyard, groups of students were clustered together, some holding newspapers with headlines that announced the Nazi military had seized control of the government. Henny imagined that everyone in the country knew by now. But hardly anyone knew of the Nazi plan to arrest all Jewish citizens. She whispered this information to Lukas and the twins as she joined them in their huddle. To her surprise, they already knew about it.

“How did you hear?” Henny asked, keeping her voice low.

“I went to the resistance house last night and Astrid told me,” Lukas replied. “She has contacts that none of us know about. How did you find out?”

Henny explained how her Jewish neighbor had come over the night before bearing the terrible news.

“The Nazis are monsters,” Emma declared, adjusting her glasses. “They don’t care about anyone except themselves.”

“And getting as much power as they can,” Sophia added.

“No matter who stands in their way!” The twins recited this last statement in unison.

“Our resistance is even more important now,” Lukas said, pushing his hair off his face. “We have to find more ways to fight for our people, and to fight for our Jewish friends and neighbors.”

This was the opportunity Henny was looking for, a chance to tell her friends about her plan to bring Jewish families to safety in Sweden aboard the Gerda III. But to do that, she would first have to tell them that she had told her parents about her activities with the Resistance—implicating them all in the plan. She still didn’t know if they would stand with her on this decision. She didn’t know if they would be angry with her and want her out of their group. What she did know was that with or without their help, she was determined to rescue the Rubin family—and others, if possible. She wanted to have the Resistance behind her.

Perhaps she should wait to talk to Astrid and Vincent first about all of this. But she was simply bursting with her idea and needed to get it out. Maybe, testing the information out on her friends before taking it to Astrid and Vincent was the better thing to do. At least, she hoped so.

“You’re right,” she began. “We have to help the Jewish citizens of our country. And I know a way that we can.”

“Tell us,” the twins cried.

Henny told them about the Gerda III and her idea to sail it to Sweden, carrying some Jewish families on board. As she spoke, she could see how supportive her friends were of her plan. Maybe she could delay talking about having revealed the Resistance to her parents.

Lukas’s face lit up with excitement. “Have you ever sailed to Sweden before?”

“Only once.
