Using the bottle tracings, transfer each label’s detail to the cake using a sharp pencil. Separately dilute a selection of colours then, using a fine paintbrush, add the painted detail to the labels (R).

There is a lot of scope for personalizing the cake by adding names, dates, and so on.

gilding the lid

1 Mix a little bronze edible lustre dust with some confectioners’ glaze and use to paint over one of the bottle tops. Individually mix up the various golds and colour the remaining bottle tops. Take a fine paintbrush and add gold detail to the labels and foils as required.

2 Mix up a larger quantity of dark/ antique gold and, using a flat-headed brush, paint the lid of the box using long horizontal strokes (S).
