I succumbed to the darkness.

Chapter 16

ZANDER

I awoke from a nightmare in a cold sweat—where I’d witnessed Luna collapse to the ground, over and over again.

I thrashed around in a semi haze and my arm hit something hard—where was I? Back at the energy outpost? My heart raced in panic. I managed to open my eyes, only to be blinded by a glaring light.

Then I remembered where I was—and that my night terror had been real.

I was back under the energy healer. I eased my leg up slightly, but experienced no pain. My brain fog had cleared; the fever must have lifted. My clammy skin was probably the result of the nightmare. I wished the healing light could stop the sick dread I felt in my stomach.

Something had happened to Luna tonight—and I had a pretty good inkling she might have experienced a memory.

But why had she fainted? Was she physically reliving what she'd seen?

We'd rushed into the safe house after she crumpled to the ground, and immediately headed upstairs to a vacant room. I demanded Madeline attend to Luna first, despite everyone's protest. They finally relented, setting up a cot adjacent to my bed. Madeline lathered Luna’s shoulder with a nerve blocker and with Crane’s help, popped it back into place.

"She probably keeled over from the pain," she explained. "Shoulder dislocations are no joke. She’s also very dehydrated, but the serum I injected into her veins will restore her cells back to their optimum level."

Madeline's reasoning sounded logical enough. However, I sensed something else caused her to pass out. I recalled nothing after that, as I must have collapsed myself.

I turned my head, relieved to see Luna still lay next to me, sleeping. Crane lounged in a chair by the door, snoring his head off.

I smiled. He would kick himself later for napping on the job.

A tap at the door had Crane bolting up ramrod straight in his chair, disoriented. "What? What happened? I swear, I didn't take the purple pony!"

I laughed. "Good dream, Crane?"

He blushed. "I must have fallen asleep, my bad." His creased cheek combined with the wild red hair spiking in all directions, made him appear even more boyish, far younger than the eighteen-year-old he was.

Madeline breezed in with her com port. "How are you feeling, Zander?"

"Great, but I'm ready to escape this contraption. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for everything, but it's not my idea of a swell time."

Madeline pressed a few keys on the com. "It looks like most of your energy balance has been restored. I would prefer to see more improvement in the sacral chakra region, but if you promise to meditate every day for the next week, I'll let you out. Deal?"

I smiled at her. "Deal," I said, relieved to notice a little piece of the old Madeline still lurked behind that frosty exterior. I wondered what caused the attitude—maybe if I hadn’t been hijacked and stuck as a battery, I could have prevented it. I felt tempted to ask her if something happened while we were gone, but I doubted she would she tell me.
