CHAPTER VIII
Where be that girlâ¦
âDoes this outfit say âFarm girl cuteâ or âFarm girl workerâ?â asked Allie as she posed for Joe and Izzie. She wore overall shorts with a plaid t-shirt on underneath with red ribbons in her pig tails.
âIt says âI donât understand farmingâ,â replied Joe.
âI like it,â said Izzie. âDo you have any more ribbons?â Izzie already knew the answer to the question. She had eyed Allieâs ribbon collection on day one but was waiting for the perfect opportunity to politely ask. With all the cabin had shared now, Izzie felt like a welcomed part of the group. No one spoke much about Alex anymore. Izzie was a perfect fit despite her differences.
âHere, wear these,â Allie handed Izzie two blue ribbons. The material was dark and shiny on one side and light blue on the underneath side. Izzie made a tiny ponytail in the front right side of her hair. The ribbons, one at the base of the pony tail and one in the middle were tied in symmetrical bow ties. They were small and adorable and more importantly they made Izzie feel welcomed and cute.
With the girls all ready to go, Allie led the way holding on to Lillianâs arm. Lillian took a deep breath.
âHay!â she said.
âWhat?â asked Allie.
âNo, not hey, hay. H-A-Y. I smell hay and lots of it,â Lillian smiled.
âWell I hope you like it because youâll be sitting on it. Oh my outfit is going to be so mad at me for this.â And with that, Allie plunked herself down on the haystack.
The smell the hay on the big wagon behind the camp tractor seemed to overpower the smell of the diesel fumes created by the tractorâs engine. Joe walked behind Izzie and helped her onto the wagon. The wagon had about 40 of the campers sitting along the perimeter and about 20 in the middle. The haystacks made for great seating and also provided a rectangular pathway for the kids to walk and find places to sit. The campers in the middle sat back-to-back facing the perimeters of the wagon while the kids on the outside haystacks looked inward and had to strain themselves to twist and see the scenery on the way to Mr. Perdasâ farm while adhering to the âfeet on the floorâ rule.
The camp van passed the slow tractor several times delivering supplies and counsellors to the farm. Each time it passed the wagon, the counsellors would scream and wave. There were no seats in the back of the van and it traveled with the rear doors open to allow for the long pieces of wood that would be used for benches to sit of at the Farmâs bonfire. There were always a lot of counsellors and CITs in the back of the van that tossed about the back of the van. If it wasnât a dirt road, the camp would have never allowed passengers in the cargo van.
Izzie was at the back by the wagonâs gate. Joe sat next to her.
