But we didn’t have all the time in the world.

The next day, Jerry was gone. He had left early in the morning on an unplanned business trip. I was disappointed to hear it but I knew I couldn’t do anything about it so I didn’t sulk. Besides, Jerry had left me flowers and you couldn’t stay mad at a man who gave you flowers.

That made me think. Jerry had given me so much but I hadn’t really given him anything. Maybe it was time I changed that.

Yup, I was going to surprise Jerry with a present. I had some money, after all, since he had been giving me an allowance. I could ask the chauffeur to take me wherever I wanted, too. There was just one problem. I didn’t really know what to get him.

I didn’t really know Jerry, after all. Yes, I knew he was the CEO of a shipping company, that he had billions, that he had a sister who was traveling around the world, that his parents and younger brother were now gone, that he was divorced and couldn’t have children but that was all.

That was all I knew about Jerry.

Curious to learn more about him so that I could give him a nice surprise when he returned, I asked around, questioning the staff. They couldn’t really tell me much, though, so I decided to take a risk and do a bit of snooping.

I went to his bedroom for the first time, surprised at how sparsely decorated it was compared to the other rooms, which wasn’t helpful. I had to go look in his drawers to get a clue about his likes, first his clothes drawers and then the drawer of his bedside table. What I saw there, though, was something I didn’t like.

There were documents regarding Dylan, documents about changing his last name and also a brochure of a boarding school in London. My eyes narrowed. Was he trying to make major decisions concerning Dylan without consulting me?

I was so annoyed I forgot that I was planning on giving Jerry a present.

Forget it. When he came back, Jerry and I were going to have a long talk.
