Chapter Six

Sleep did not come to him fast and for a few hours he lay tossing about in bed. Zantaza too, as she had so much going on in her mind to fall asleep. The entire house was quiet now as everyone had since gone to bed. Roy decided to go check on Zantaza then, noting it was already past 2 am in the morning. Making his way silently to her room, he pushed the door then went inside her room to sit next to her.

Zantaza heard the door creak open then saw someone walking to her side. It took a while for her to recognise Roy as he bent over to feel her forehead. Realizing she was awake, he sat down on the seat beside her bed.

“I could not sleep and decided to come check on you. How are you feeling now?” he asked her.

“The pain is not too much now but I could use some relieve.” Roy took a painkiller from the pack that sat on her bedside table then handed her a glass of water to take.

“That should help with the pain. Would you like help with anything else?” he continued. Not sure whether she should tell him of her need to go to the bathroom, she decided to tell him all the same.

“As a matter of fact yes. I would like to use the lavatory.” She told him. Roy helped her out of bed before walking her slowly to the bathroom. He took a seat by her side once she was back in bed chatting softly before the medicine took effect. Zantaza had no idea whether it was the effect of the drugs or the fact that she was alone with him in the wee hours of the night, but she soon got sharing some intimate details with him.

“I have been heartbroken ever since Max walked away from me. He made me stand to wait for him at the altar well knowing he had no intention of showing up.” She started. Roy sat listening to her narrate her story of pain, relieving his own through her.

“He had me waiting at the altar the entire morning on the day we were to get married. You can only imagine my humiliation in front of friends and family.” She went on, breaking into heart-wrenching sobs as she spoke. He could feel her pain through her voice and well understood the desperation she felt. It was no easy thing for one to let go of a person they loved enough to want to get married to. Finally he spoke up, in an attempt to offer her consolation.

“I know how horrible that must have felt to you. I wonder why anyone would do such a thing to someone whose love they had won.” The statement only made things worse as she was now openly sobbing, despite his attempts to cool her down. He waited until she had it all off her shoulders before launching into his own tale of woe.

“I lost my wife and daughter in a road accident caused by a drunken driver.
