It wasn’t until after four o’clock that Rich finally called Janine back to his office. James was still there. Rich looked much more grim than she had ever seen him. “Take a seat please, Janine.”

Janine sat slowly, unsettled by the serious atmosphere.

Rich took a deep breath and shook his head, “Go ahead, James.”

“Janine, I think you know what this is about,” James began.

Janine looked at Rich then at James with a look of surprise and shook her head.

“Well,” he continued, “let me spell it out, and I think you’ll put the puzzle pieces together. Effective yesterday, Paul Anderson is no longer part of this company.”

“Wait, what? You can’t just fire him without talking to me about it. That’s supposed to go through me. What’s his wife going to do? Someone really needs our insurance, so we fire them so we can protect our bottom line?”

James held up his hand.

“Rich, back me up here.” Janine looked at Rich.

“Janine, what does this have to do with insurance?” Rich asked.

“He needs the insurance, Rich. His wife has breast cancer and he has two young kids at home,” she campaigned. “I thought H&H was supposed to care about people. Besides, if we’re loyal to him now, it will pay dividends in the long run.”

“Come on, Janine.” James interjected.

“What?”

“Let’s do the math. You took over last January, his sales starting dropping not too long after that and have been in a steady decline since.”

“I’m doing my best to help him with his numbers,” Janine argued.

“Yeah, good job on that.”

“Ron could have told me to fire him if he wanted him fired.”

James rolled his eyes, “That’s because you vouched for him.”

Expecting Rich to intervene, Janine didn’t respond.

Before Rich could respond, James accused, “How long have you known that Paul got a DUI last January and why were you hiding it from us?” He and Rich both watched her carefully.

“What? DUI? What?”

“Yeah, HR just finished their review of all of our sales reps’ driving records, and, here’s the kicker, he’s been in jail for three days now because he just got convicted of a second one.” James dug at her, “But I guess you know that because you’ve been working so closely with him to keep his numbers up.”

Janine’s stunned look showed that she had no idea Paul had been in jail.

“Janine,” Rich tried to be diplomatic, “I know you’ve been taking on a lot of responsibilities with Ron being gone, but I’m surprised that you didn’t know something was up. He’s been in jail for three days now. How often do you check in with your reps?” Rich continued not waiting for her answer, “I know it’s not all your fault, but the company has lost nearly almost one hundred thousand dollars over the past year because of his underperformance. We would have helped foot the bill for his wife’s cancer . . . but, cancer or not, a DUI—two DUIs—no can do.”

“I promise. I didn’t know about the DUI. I know I didn’t tell Ron
