It wasnât until after four oâclock that Rich finally called Janine back to his office. James was still there. Rich looked much more grim than she had ever seen him. âTake a seat please, Janine.â
Janine sat slowly, unsettled by the serious atmosphere.
Rich took a deep breath and shook his head, âGo ahead, James.â
âJanine, I think you know what this is about,â James began.
Janine looked at Rich then at James with a look of surprise and shook her head.
âWell,â he continued, âlet me spell it out, and I think youâll put the puzzle pieces together. Effective yesterday, Paul Anderson is no longer part of this company.â
âWait, what? You canât just fire him without talking to me about it. Thatâs supposed to go through me. Whatâs his wife going to do? Someone really needs our insurance, so we fire them so we can protect our bottom line?â
James held up his hand.
âRich, back me up here.â Janine looked at Rich.
âJanine, what does this have to do with insurance?â Rich asked.
âHe needs the insurance, Rich. His wife has breast cancer and he has two young kids at home,â she campaigned. âI thought H&H was supposed to care about people. Besides, if weâre loyal to him now, it will pay dividends in the long run.â
âCome on, Janine.â James interjected.
âWhat?â
âLetâs do the math. You took over last January, his sales starting dropping not too long after that and have been in a steady decline since.â
âIâm doing my best to help him with his numbers,â Janine argued.
âYeah, good job on that.â
âRon could have told me to fire him if he wanted him fired.â
James rolled his eyes, âThatâs because you vouched for him.â
Expecting Rich to intervene, Janine didnât respond.
Before Rich could respond, James accused, âHow long have you known that Paul got a DUI last January and why were you hiding it from us?â He and Rich both watched her carefully.
âWhat? DUI? What?â
âYeah, HR just finished their review of all of our sales repsâ driving records, and, hereâs the kicker, heâs been in jail for three days now because he just got convicted of a second one.â James dug at her, âBut I guess you know that because youâve been working so closely with him to keep his numbers up.â
Janineâs stunned look showed that she had no idea Paul had been in jail.
âJanine,â Rich tried to be diplomatic, âI know youâve been taking on a lot of responsibilities with Ron being gone, but Iâm surprised that you didnât know something was up. Heâs been in jail for three days now. How often do you check in with your reps?â Rich continued not waiting for her answer, âI know itâs not all your fault, but the company has lost nearly almost one hundred thousand dollars over the past year because of his underperformance. We would have helped foot the bill for his wifeâs cancer . . . but, cancer or not, a DUIâtwo DUIsâno can do.â
âI promise. I didnât know about the DUI. I know I didnât tell Ron
