Product and Service Offerings
Now you know your target market and your peers. Newbies, it’s time to decide what products and services you’re going to offer. Existing business owners, you’re going to evaluate what you offer and determine if you’re in need of a revamp.
It’s Not About You
I can’t tell you how many times clients have come to me with the problem that nobody was buying the product they’d put their heart and soul into. It’s heartbreaking, really. But more often than not, they could have prevented this problem from the start.
If you create a product based on what you think your target market needs (or that the world needs), you’re making a grave mistake. Buyers don’t buy what you want them to buy or even what you think they need. They buy what they think they need and what they want to buy. You can’t change the world if the world isn’t interested in the change you think the world should make.
If you have a product that you think your target market needs and/or that you absolutely must create to express some higher purpose or vision, you can still create it. But if you want people to buy it, either you have to find a target market that wants what you’re determined to create, or you have to find a way to incorporate what your target market wants.
“Buyers don’t buy what you want them to buy or even what you think they need. They buy what they think they need and what they want to buy.”
If you created a product or wrote a book that meant the world to you but didn’t sell, I feel your pain. I really do. But now you need to revisit where that thing came from and whether it can be retrofitted to appeal to your target market.
