Role of Micro-Finance

Micro-finance has good linkage with MSME growth (Kumar et al. 2010; Sievers and Vandenberg 2007; Singh 2009) where micro-finance is used to provide financial assistance to the MSMEs. Further, the Fourth All India Census of MSME, for both registered and unregistered sectors, indicated that most of the enterprises coming under the segment of MSMEs are micro-enterprises considering the rural enterprises of the northeastern part of India (Source—Fourth All India Census of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, 2006–2007, Unregistered Sector; Fourth All India Census of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, 2006–2007, Registered Sector) (see Notes 6 and 7). Naturally, a lot of authors have chosen micro-finance and the matters related to micro-finance in their research related to Northeast India. Opportunities attached in using micro-finance for the development of entrepreneurship came in the works of Devi (2014), Sharma and Bora (2015), and Sharma (2017). Exploring the role of micro-finance in developing the financial position of women entrepreneurs of Self-Help Groups (SHG), Devi (2014), in the context of Manipur, found that micro-finance resolves the needs of women entrepreneurs as they get easy financial support for their businesses during times of emergency. The work of Sharma and Bora (2015) second the findings of Devi (2014) in the context of Sonitpur in Assam, where they found that the main advantage of micro-finance is to provide entrepreneurship opportunities to the poor who can’t get bank loans. The entrepreneurship opportunity helped the poor to increase their standard of living. The research of Sharma (2017) further supported the findings of Sharma and Bora (2015).
