Jesse

I brought the green bottle to my lips and took a swig of cheap beer, which did nothing for me anymore. The skunkiness of it made me wonder how I had ever liked it. Two guys were beating the crap out of each other on the projector screen in the truck house of LBFD. I normally enjoyed watching the fights, but I wasn’t in the mood. I’d been in a funk for over a week, ever since that night I’d shared a moment with Lana at Hop Toddy.

I’d touched her. I had seen the sadness in her eyes and I’d wanted to take it all away from her, so I’d touched her, and the wall I’d built to protect myself from continuing to fall for her had crumbled. When I’d told myself that I was going to let Lana go a few weeks ago, after my conversation with Autumn, I’d promised my heart that I wouldn’t touch her. I’d go to work, do my job, keep her safe, and go home. It’d been a good strategy. Until I broke it.

“Hi.” A blonde in a mini skirt slid into the chair next to me.

The firehouse was swarming with badge bunnies that night, and while I could definitely use a quick fuck–I hadn’t had sex since before I met Lana–I couldn’t be less interested in what they were offering. Very unlike me.

I nudged my chin toward the chick next to me who looked at me expectantly, and took another swig of my beer.

“I’m Lexi.” She rocked her shoulders, shaking her boobs at me, but I wasn’t biting.

“Jesse,” I said, flatly.

She pursed her lips, apparently waiting for me to say more. I didn’t.

She started to fan herself with her fingers. “It’s a little warm in here, Jesse. Don’t you think?”

“Nope.” I kept my eyes on the screen, willing her to take the hint.

She didn’t. “I’m so thirsty. Do you mind if I have a sip of your beer?” She held her hand out expectantly.

The only woman I’d ever share a beer with again was Lana. I pointed toward the bar. “There’s plenty over there.”

A little of the light went out of her eyes. “Oh. Okay. Well, do you want to go up there with me to get one?”

She was either that dumb or that persistent. I couldn’t have been clearer about my disinterest.

“Honey, you are wasting your time.” I’d already forgotten her name. “I’m not biting tonight.”

She put her hand on my thigh. “I think I can change your mind.”

Persistent. Definitely persistent.

I stood up and she gasped, seemingly disgusted, as I went to a table where some of the guys were. As I sat down they all stared at me with their mouths hanging open. Why had I thought going there that night had been a good idea? I wanted to take my mind off of Lana, not be constantly reminded of the fact that she wasn’t there with me.

“You feelin’ all right, bro?” Travis asked.

“A huh.”

Phil chimed in. “You sure?”

I crossed my
