Chapter 8
Pip didn’t want to move from where she was. She knew that sooner rather than later someone was going to notice that she was awake, but for now she was on her own. A lot of things swirled around in her head at the moment, mostly the situation that she’d failed at with Shane and Walter.
“They’re both doing well. Walter woke earlier this morning, but Shane is still in a drug induced coma. They want to leave him that way for a few more days to make sure that he’s able to handle the pain.” Pip didn’t move, hoping that Howie would just go away. “Not going to happen, I’m afraid. It’s my turn to sit with you, and I’m not leaving until Burke returns from taking a shower. He was smelling pretty bad, and we told him to go and freshen up or you’d have a hard time being near him when you woke.”
“I failed him. And the rest of you.” He asked her how she’d done that. “I had no idea that Shane was hurt as badly as he was.”
“Happens. But in this case, it turned out well for him anyway. Had you not helped Walter, he would have died, I’m told. But he didn’t die, thanks to your fast thinking. And from what I’ve heard, you saved Shane as well by giving those men and women there a little more of yourself to keep them going.” She let the tears fall. “You can’t be taking on the world, Pip, and expect to come out the winner every time.”
“I can’t seem to win at all.” He asked her how she figured that. “I told him I’d keep him safe if he needed me.”
“I said that to my son too. And as much as it pains me, and it does every day, I guess by your way of thinking, I failed him too.” She rolled to her back and looked at him. “You think that just because you say something, something you fully believed, that anyone is going to think you failed them when you gave more than you should have to make it work? I don’t think so. And if they did, then I’d like a word or two with them. There is no way for it to come out right every single time. Never. Heck, girl. Had I had my way, I would have gone down there that day and gladly traded my life for my son. Micah didn’t deserve to die that day any more than them boys did being hurt. You have no idea how many times I wish I could have done just that and saved this family all that grief.”
“This isn’t the same.” He asked her how it wasn’t. “He was hurt badly. I could have given both of them some of my magic and they both would have been fine.”
“They’re both fine now. And as I’ve said, that’s because of you.” She rolled to her side again. “You thinking that because I’m not agreeing with you that the conversation is done? It ain’t.
