THE CHEF PILED UP SLICED onions into a tapering mountain. His skilled manipulation of the metal spatulas impressed me.

“For my finale,” he said, “I’m going to give you an erupting Mount Fuji.”

He drizzled oil over the onions and then inside them. He pulled a match from his apron pocket and then struck it on the side of the grill. He dropped it inside the onions, and a flame burst from the top for several long seconds before a column of smoke replaced it.

Mom clapped, her face alight with wonder. I almost laughed at how impressed she was by such a simple trick.

The chef finished dicing some other fried vegetables before distributing our food. “Have a good meal.”

I picked up a piece of beef with my chopsticks and took a bite. Nice and juicy.

“I’m glad I was able to see you again so soon,” Mom said. “I forgot to tell you that I’m leaving next week.”

I swallowed my beef and frowned. “Yeah, that is kind of important to know. When?”

“I’m flying out on Saturday. I’m going to spend a month in Tokyo.”

I chuckled. “That’s why you have a sudden interest in teppanyaki?”

“Among other things.” She nibbled on a piece of chicken. “How are things going with Chrissy?”

I forced a smile on my face. I’d hoped that Mom wouldn’t bring her up, but I also suspected it was inevitable. That’s what I got for introducing Chrissy to her to begin with.

“Okay,” I said. “We’re still figuring things out.”

Mom frowned and shook her head. “You’re not sending a man to the moon. It’s a relationship. It’s not that difficult.”

“Easy for you to say. You were married to the same man for decades.”

Mom scoffed, a cold look coming to her mind. “That’s your excuse now?”

I grimaced. “That’s not what I’m saying.”

“It’s simple, Baker,” she said. “How do you feel?”

“I don’t know. I’m not sure.”

Mom narrowed her eyes. “Then get sure. I know that you’re used to trollops hanging off your arms and showing up with a snap of your finger. That’s fine for a young man who needs to sow his wild oats, but you’re not fresh out of school anymore, and you’re looking for more. If you weren’t, this wouldn’t be upsetting you.”

“It’s not upsetting me, Mom.”

“Yes, it is. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be so defensive.”

I groaned. “I’m not defensive.”

“A woman like Chrissy won’t just sit there and wait for you. If you’re not willing to fight for her, someone else will come for her eventually. So either you get over whatever it is holding you back, or you accept that you’re going to lose her.”

I stared at Mom for a moment but didn’t say anything. What could I say?

My heart thundered in my chest. The problem was I was afraid. Afraid of losing Chrissy, but also afraid of what I felt for her.

Even after Dad had died and I decided to change, life had been simple, and I knew what I’d wanted. But Chrissy was changing everything, and I didn’t know if I was ready.
