Chapter Two

As the bell rang, I opened the door to the archive room searching for the old newspaper articles from years past. Setting the ones about the fire aside, I sorted through every article I could find that referenced the Wolf Pack or anonymous sources. Pulling out the flash drive from my back pack, I scanned each one on it and then copied them with the printer for good measure. I didn’t want to miss anything that might help me bring down the Wolf Pack.

The bell rang again signaling first period was over, but I didn’t stop even then. The truth needed to come out and writing the article for The Centennial Times was my sole purpose. War and Jay had all but confirmed the doping on the team, but neither would agree to be the source I needed, anonymous or not. However, technically I had seen the scene unfold in Coach Belview’s office with Copper and no one knew I was there except War. He hadn’t ratted me out yet. I decided that it was a risk I was willing to take.

Hesitating above the keyboard, I thought about Malcolm’s mother at the animal clinic. Even after all of these years, she was still distraught over his death. Would the same fate befall me at outing the Wolf Pack?

Releasing a pent-up breath, I shuddered.

And then began to type.

Starting with the headline, I knew it had to be catchy enough to gain everyone’s attention so the phrase Accident or Murder? came to mind. There was no use in being subtle about a story this big. It was all or nothing and I was jumping in with both feet.

Deciding to do a two-part article to gauge the reaction of the student body would be the best route, today I wrote about the fire and Malcolm’s death. I weaved the facts in a way that spun the truth to the possibility that he could’ve been murdered, although I didn’t name the Wolf Pack as his executioners.

Not yet.

I had forged a plan while writing to get proof in pictures of the doping. No one would believe me and otherwise the article and all of the research would be hearsay. I couldn’t let this opportunity to make the truth known slip through my fingers due to sloppy journalism. I had determined to sneak back into the Wolf Pack’s practice tonight with my camera, snap a few pictures, and blow the lid off of this whole shit show with another article tomorrow.

Malcolm deserved for the truth to be known.

Uncurling the piece of paper from my pocket, I looked over Malcolm’s home address which I had stolen when Maggie wasn’t around at Dr. Harris’s office. The last time his mother and I spoke, I know I upset her. But was it to such an extent that she wouldn’t help me uncover the truth? If I could bring her hard evidence, the pictures of the actual doping, maybe she would be more apt to at least listen to what I had to say.
