THE POWER OF IMAGINATION
Whether it was life after a failed adoption, the end of my run at Disney, or going through a divorce, one of the biggest challenges for me in the earliest days after each was imagining what my life would look like now that everything had changed. Iâd had one vision for how the rest of my life would unfold. But now my plans and dreams for what would come were different, compromising my ability to see an alternative at times that could feel as rich, hopeful, and comfortable as the one Iâd been connected to for so much of my life.
As Iâve mentioned, sometimes the decision to leave a harbor is one you make for yourself, and other times it is made for you. No matter the reason for shoving off, having a vision for where you are going can be the hardest part.
If you are struggling to create that motion picture in your head that gets you fired up, out of bed early, and excited for the work that comes in the pursuit, it may be that youâre having trouble separating the circumstances of your present from the possibilities of your future.
I know that was the case for me. As I stood on the dock, one foot in the boat, the chaos of my current situation blurred the imagination for all the good that sat in front of me. The new dreams, deeper relationships, professional pursuits unlocking my calling, those things were clouded by my short-term experience of chaos.
Believing in the version of the coming year I deserved and the kind of life that would unfold for me began with learning to reframe the circumstances of my present in a way that created hope. Hope that exists irrespective of, or maybe even because of the events unfolding in real time.
What youâre going through as you build this plan isnât an indicator of what you deserve. What youâve experienced isnât a limit for whatâs possible in this journey ahead. It requires reframing what youâre going through into empowering stories of perseverance and strength. Creating a map that unleashes your full potential starts with reconnecting with who you are and why youâre here.
For me, jump-starting my imagination came from the community of close friends who helped remind me of who I am deep down. Getting closer to a higher power gave me perspective on what was happening and reminded me that my external circumstances and the essence of my being were in no way connected and never had been. Reading the books on mindset, listening to the podcasts for personal development, immersing myself in the motivational and inspirational content acted as a jumper cable to a battery in need of a charge. It was the invigoration from this combination of sources that would bring me back to the bigger-than-life imagination I had when I was a kid. An imagination that would act as an accomplice in manufacturing courage.
