By the 1750s vessels such as Triumph were a compromise between the earlier shape and the need to use less timber and more iron. Triumph's body was more angular than Thunderer's, and closer to French ships in shape. Though Triumph heralded a new era in ship design, it is perhaps preferable to look upon her as marking the end of the rotund elegance of vessels such as the all-wooden Thunderer, which epitomizes the essence of Georgian design. This kind of hull shape continued only in smaller vessels like the 64s and the Diana and Minerva class frigates, in which size and quantities of timber were not so critical.
