Framing Details

If you have a backsplash, an attached eating counter, angled corners, or other features, the framing can get complicated. The photos below demonstrate some of the methods used. The good news is that you can easily unscrew and disassemble connections if you make a mistake. You may want to hire a professional if you feel you are getting in over your head. Some principles to keep in mind:

■ Double-check your openings to be sure doors and appliances will fit. Always keep in mind the thickness of the countertop material as well as the backer board and the stonework or stucco finish material.

■ It may not always be feasible to attach backer board as you go. When framing without backer board, add temporary angled supports to keep the structure rigid (below left).

■ When framing for a 45-degree-angle corner (below center top), here for an eating counter, run one of the pieces a foot or so longer than needed. Snip the long piece’s two sides at the two points necessary to form the correct angle, and bend the piece to shape. Slip the longer angled arm over the piece coming from the other direction, and attach it using screws.

■ When framing a cantilever, you may need to snip cutouts to accommodate the outwardly extending studs (below center bottom). (The framing shown here and in the photo above is fairly stiff but not strong enough to support the eating counter; it will be supported later by decorative angle brackets.)

■ Adding backer board will actually supply much of the counter’s strength (below right). Many builders prefer fiber-reinforced backer board to cement-based board for intricate framing with narrow openings.
