Chapter 13

“Ummm, Jack?” Nicola whispered. As she stared at the giant deer, she appeared totally frozen in place, and her mouth was dropped slightly open in awe. “Do you see this?”

“Yeah, I do,” I replied. This was pretty amazing to watch. “He just came right up to you?”

“Yes,” the dark-haired woman breathed. “Look at his antlers and his huge eyes… he’s staring right at me! What am I supposed to do now?”

“Well, you said you were going to hunt…” I responded, though I wasn’t sure I’d be able to kill an animal that had approached me like this.

“It’s so strange…” Nicola mused. “I was ready to shoot, and then he saw me, but he didn’t freeze. I guess I was the one who froze in place! He just kept walking toward me, and… Jack, what do I do if I don’t want to kill him? He seems so tame.”

“This seems like a very unique situation,” I assured her. “I’m sure Aleia and Penelope will understand.”

“I don’t know exactly what’s happening,” the dark-haired woman said, and her eyes widened even further. “I’ve always had a special relationship with animals, which I guess you’re aware of, but nothing like this.”

I knew it had something to do with her special skill leveling up, but there was no way I could explain that to her.

“I guess he’s just drawn to you,” I told Nicola instead. “He must see something kind in your eyes.”

“Kind?” the brunette laughed. “That’s not always the first word people use to describe me, but I appreciate the compliment. In any case, I have goosebumps right now…”

Nicola rubbed at her arms, and then she reached down, pulled a small red berry off a bush, and held out her hand to the buck. He bent his giant head down to eat the fruit out of her palm, and the dark-haired beauty reached out to stroke one of his giant antlers. The priestess’ face was totally relaxed into a peaceful expression, and she bowed her head for a moment as if in prayer. The forest seemed almost totally silent, and I heard her sigh with contentment.

It was honestly one of the most beautiful things I’d witnessed since becoming a god, or maybe ever, and it made me love Nicola even more. I also realized for the first time just how powerful the level-ups could make the women, and I wondered what was next for Aleia and Penelope.

Finally, the buck gave Nicola one last look with his huge, shining, dark-brown eyes, and then he turned and trotted back through the woods. The brunette simply held her bow loosely in one hand as she watched him leave, and it was clear she had no intention of hunting the magnificent creature.

“That was incredible, Nicola,” I praised the priestess.

“Jack, I didn’t even do anything,” the dark-haired woman said in a quiet tone. “I was just about to kill him, but he wasn’t afraid of me at all. That was definitely… a special animal.”

“Or maybe you’re a special person,” I suggested.
