The Talisker House had stood atop the bluff at Smuggler’s Cove since before Sunnydale had come into existence. It was, in truth, the reason the spot was called Smuggler’s Cove to begin with. William Talisker was of Scots descent, though his family had been in America before there had been an America to speak of. The youngest of four sons, he had come west after the discovery of gold in California in 1848. Unlike so many prospectors, William Talisker had found a cure for gold fever.

He had gotten rich.

By the time the mandate had come down from the federal government to build a transcontinental railroad, he was in place to provide some of the services necessary on the Pacific end. With the outbreak of the Civil War, most of the railroad-building efforts were concentrated on the west, and in 1862 the northern government ordered a line built west from Sacramento. William Talisker only grew richer.

Upon his retirement in 1879 he went in search of a place to grow old in peace. A place where he could look out at the Pacific Ocean, a place where the same sort of growth he had thrived upon and even helped to foster had not yet reached. He found that place in a small hamlet in the southern part of the state where only a handful of families had settled thus far. Upon a bluff two hundred feet above the gentle surf of a narrow cove, William Talisker had a formidable home built of stone. From among the few families already settled nearby he took a new young wife, his third. The first he had left behind when he’d come west and promptly forgotten about. The second had died while he had been overseeing the construction of the railroad.

Sarah Talisker was nineteen when she married William, who was fifty-four and ailing, yet she bore him two sons before he died some years later. The Talisker boys—Billy and Sam—were a vital part of Sunnydale during the time when it officially became a township and elected its first mayor, Richard Wilkins. The boys were natural explorers, investigating every dusty corner of the sprawling house and the grounds around it, getting to know everyone in town, every hill and field of Sunnydale. They were heirs to a great fortune but as children they rambled the way boys often did.

At the edge of their property the Talisker boys discovered a crevice in the earth. Within that crevice—left there by the drift of continents or the passing of glaciers or some less tumultuous natural event they could not fathom—they found a cavern. A system of caves, in fact, connected by splits in the rock and earth that often passed for natural tunnels. For months they spent each day, every available minute, exploring the caves and tunnels with lanterns and inventing stories about monsters that must live inside them. Over time they found to their delight that if they were determined enough they could follow the path all the way
