Chapter 10

“This is far enough, Oz.” Buffy pushed a dangling plastic skeleton aside and lifted her Slayer bag off the floor behind Oz’s seat. The turnoff to Coyote Rock was just ahead. She appreciated the ride out from town, but driving any closer would alert the people in the archaeological camp.

“You sure you want to get out here?” Oz steered the van onto the shoulder of the paved back road and peered through the windshield. Visibility was almost zero, in darkness lit by a mere sliver of moon. “It’s a mile hike up to the site.”

“Take my word for it. That wannabe road is the automotive equivalent of the elephant’s graveyard. If we searched, we’d find the rusting innards of all the old clunkers that came here to die.”

“I have to drive it tomorrow.” Oz’s bushy eyebrows twitched with concern.

Buffy smiled sympathetically. The van was more than just cool transportation for Oz. It was a diary written in boy toys, a rolling museum of accumulated stuff that told his life story. The only things he cared about more were those that lived and breathed—and maybe his guitar.

“True, but there’s no sense running the gauntlet more than once if you don’t have to.” Opening the door, Buffy slid out and grabbed the tranquilizer gun stashed behind the passenger seat. “Are you going back to the library?”

“Not right away. Xander’s on the phone trying to beg and borrow the camping gear on Giles’s list. We’ll stop by after we’ve collected everything.” Oz leaned across the seat as Buffy started to push the door closed. “What about you? How are you going to get back?”

“It’s only a few miles going cross-country. I’ll be fine.” Waving, Buffy shouldered her arsenal and darted into the brush.
