Crystal’s attention was diverted from Willow when she felt the alarm transmitted through the matrix of vegetation standing sentinel. There were four intruders: the Slayer, the spellcaster, the demon and the boy. She sent a surge through the power lines to deliver an explosive message. She was aware of their presence.

She was also cautious and irritated.

They were defenseless against her power, but the pervasive great fear that had infected previous societies and had forced her to postpone the meld in her more recent incarnations was a sleeping monster in Sunnydale, too. She must not awaken it with foolish displays of power or an unexplained mass murder. The loss of Willow’s close friends might disrupt the carefully cultivated harmony of the coven, raise questions better left unasked. Innocents except for Anya, the twelve had to participate in the ritual without reservation or fear. Although multiple deaths were an every night occurrence in the small town, the risk was unnecessary on the eve of achieving her goal.

Overconfidence was as much an enemy as the mob.

And perhaps, instilling a false sense of confidence in the enemy would forestall the greater threat.

The exercise might even prove amusing.

Crystal intercepted the librarian’s call to Lugh and waved the darkness aside. As expected, the four quickly moved into the forest, no doubt intent on rescuing Willow. She turned back to the stricken girl, whose untapped abilities were vital.

“Do you so pledge?”
