WANGDU’S TEAM DESCENDED ON A HILLSIDE FORESTED WITH PINES. Thousands of Chinese were known to be in the area. The team hid their excess equipment and climbed to the top of a nearby prominence in an effort to find their bearings. All was not peaceful in the darkened forests of Kham. They heard gunfire not too far away. Nervously, they bedded down for the night.

It was not until the next morning that Wangdu realized the plane had overshot its target by a good six miles. He and his two companions headed back south toward Wangdu’s home village. That afternoon, while walking a ridge, the team ran into a nomad moving a herd of Khampa ponies. Wangdu asked the man if there were any rebels in the vicinity. The nomad nodded. “Lots of Chinese, too,” he added. He agreed to lead the team to the rebels’ magar.

Just as it was getting dark, Wangdu’s team emerged into a clearing where the rebels were camped. There was a moment or two of uneasiness and suspicion. But soon the two groups converged on one another with open arms. Among the rebel band was a warrior by the name of Bhugan Gyatotsang. Bhugan was Wangdu’s older brother .349

The Khampa boys were home.
