Clairaudience Exercises

Exercise 1—Conch Shell

Most of us, as children, have held up a seashell to our ears and heard the “sounds of the sea.” A similar practice can lead to the development of clairaudience.

Obtain a good size conch shell and hold it to your ear. You will again hear that distant roaring sound, as of the ocean. It is probably due to the air within the cavities of the shell and the resounding properties of the various inner curves of its surfaces. If you use two shells, and hold one to each ear, the experience will be doubled but may be extended even more than that.

If you sit quietly and do your lead-in exercise—head exercises plus deep breathing—then close your eyes and take up the shells, you can pick up sounds other than those of which I’ve just spoken. Many psychics can hear distant voices. By concentrating, you can frequently hear your own name being called. Once again, you need to try to clear your mind as much as possible, thinking of nothing in particular. Just sit and listen. Starting with hearing their own name, many psychics then go on to distinguish other words and even to distinguish particular voices. Clairaudient messages can eventually come through.

What you hear may be merely the externalizing of your own thoughts and auditory messages from the unconscious mind. But it may also be more than that, being telepathic or premonitory messages that are actual spirit communication. Much depends on the content of the message, of course. And, as with the above-mentioned exercises, everything should be checked out so far as you are able. If you obtain a jumble of nonsense it is probably your own subconscious activity and may be disregarded. But if you obtain a characteristic and direct message, check it out to see if there is validity to it. As in so much of spiritual contact, you must use your own judgment as to the value of what you receive.
