CHAPTER FIFTEEN

For two straight days, Brutus had been following the group of nine women, including Fina as their prisoner, through some of the wettest, darkest rainforest he’d ever seen. Whatever route they were taking back to the village, it was ten times tougher than the way they’d traveled before. The vegetation was so dense that the trees almost entirely blocked out the sunlight. Adding to his strife, he had no plan, no weapons, and no idea how he was going to take on all of these female warriors, but he knew he had to do something before they reached their village. It was far easier to fight eight women than ninety-eight. Sadly, however, the only thing he could think of was to wait until one of the women fell behind or separated herself from the group. Then he could overpower her, take her sword, and wait. When the other women came looking for the missing member of the group, he would take them out, too. He’d hardly call it a great plan, given how it was dependent upon the women only coming at him two or three at a time.

Another problem: Those women were freaking machines! They didn’t stop to eat, pee, or sleep more than a few hours each night. He was keeping up with them, but barely. And fighting anyone in such a weakened state was not wise.

Tonight, I must make my move. If he waited any longer, he would be too sleep deprived and hungry to rescue a flea, let alone his princess.

Wait. My princess? That was odd. Fina wasn’t his. She was…just a very hot, strong, smart, and loyal warrior.

Sure, he admired her. Sure, he wouldn’t mind a little swordplay in her bed, but he didn’t want a relationship with the damned woman. Going after her was merely the right thing to do.

Just around midnight, the women finally stopped to rest and build a fire to roast some lizards and squirrels he assumed they’d caught along the way.

Hiding behind a large tree, Brutus’s stomach grumbled. What he wouldn’t give for a pizza or a burger and fries. He’d been trying to eat healthier these past few months, because immortal or not, his body felt stronger when he ate nutritious natural foods, but right now he could go for some serious junk food. Or even squirrel.

As the women ate, he snuck around the perimeter of their camp to get a better lay of the land. Fina was about twenty feet from the fire, tied to a tree. Two women were tending to the jungle kabobs. Four women were eating.

Hmm. I wonder where the other two are.

“Hello, handsome. Back for some more fun?” He felt a sharp spear between his shoulder blades.

He turned to fight, but he felt something scratch his arm. Oh no. It’s that poison Colel mentioned. His vision turned blurry, and then something hit him on the back of the head.
